The Problem
A high-end brand appliance client was using soft-touch coating to decorate their products, which were widely applied to the company’s numerous items. The customer was searching for an alternative way to adorn their products in order to save money and increase the manufacturing process’ efficiency, as they have been suffering from the high cost due to production defect rate and environmental protection. Nevertheless, they don’t want to see a consumer feeling cheap low quality or generate anything harm to their brand image.
Our Solution
GEMS Manufacturing team suggested a number of hard and soft material constructions and surface treatment options to replace the soft-touch coating. The customer took a thorough look at the presented options, and after marketing review and functionality testing, one of our proposed solutions was selected to put into execution. It was a combined solution that a new formula on the material and a special mold surface texture were to apply to achieve the expected surface finish feeling, which was come up after our multiple coordinations with the mold maker, resin manufacturer and pigment supplier.
The Result
The customer received a matt fine texture product decoration (removing soft-touch coating) at lower cost per unit, while it gives similar feeling like soft-touch coating to consumers. With the implementation of new manufacturing solution with GEMS, the customer benefits from significant product cost reductions (about 30%) during procurement and distribution, as well as relief from the tremendous pressure they were facing for supply reliability and environmental friendliness.
